This rang true to me on so many levels. I, too, have been experiencing a major career slump the past 18 months or so. It's really rocked me on a new level and revealed the very weak foundations of society as a whole. Thank you for sharing! Sending you lots of love and thinking back to the glory days at The Bakery when things felt a lot lighter.
Ah Bekka I’m so sorry that things have been tough for you too. So many creatives have reached out to me to say the same thing and while the solidarity is comforting, I also feel so sad and angry that we are all struggling with the same problems. I hope for a beautiful change of energy for us and the world soon. Keep making your wonderful things. Sending love ❤️
Honestly, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to pursue art full-time unless you come from a wealthy background. 😔 Many of my artist friends have taken on side hustles over the past few years. I never made the leap to full-time art; I’ve kept my tech job for four days a week, and I’m grateful for that. As much as I’d love to create art every day, I don’t want to worry about paying my bills.
I recently watched a fascinating documentary about artists in Germany, and it highlighted how everyone had a side hustle. One artist mentioned that it’s no longer about work-life balance, but rather about work-art balance. I think I’ll write about this on my Substack soon.
Thank you for sharing your honest and vulnerable writing. I know you understand that there is a lot of value in just making the world a little more beautiful, sharing your vision, and being kind. You’re in a hard field, and it’s the rare artist, actor, musician, or writer who doesn’t need other work to pay for life. There is absolutely no shame in that. Needing a second source of income doesn’t have anything to do with your value or the importance of what you create. I think a lot of people who appear to be making with art alone are paying a marketing company or spending 40 hours a week on their social media, which is a job.
Hi Jeanne, thanks so much for your thoughtful and kind comments and i really agree with you . I think the larger issue for me is feeling that with young kid I already don’t have enough time to paint and so then the fear that taking on another job will really limit what I can do with my art. But I’ll work it out! Sending love .
Hello Katy, just wanted to let you know, that even though I haven't bought any of your paintings (yet), I really like many of them! I just don't have the means to invest right now.
I believe it might be challenging to find the people who appreciate and buy your art. But I'm sure there are many out there, somewhere.
Hi Rene, thank you so much for your thoughtful message and kind words about my work. You bring up such a good point - I also have many artists that I want to invest in but can’t afford to right now, so I can relate 💜

Sending you both a hug 🫶🏼

By the way, Tangled is my favorite of your paintings. It brings me joy.
